“It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.” – Joaquin Phoenix
Diet considerations aside (and I do not judge anyone for what they do or do not eat), all animals should be respected and honoured for what they are: incredible creatures, beautiful miracles in existence (just as we are), and our companions on this planet. They can show us miraculous things if we look at them with kindness, compassion and due respect. We can learn a lot from them. They can be our friends and teachers who show us great affection without words. It isn’t for me to say what is right or wrong, but I do believe that you can be a meat-eater and still honour animals; in fact, you should honour them all the more for sustaining you.
Move on this Earth, and amongst all her creatures, gently – take only what is needed, and always with deep, deep gratitude. Think about all the other beings on this planet and how your actions affect them. Think of the forests, the rivers and the oceans.
It is a privilege to walk upon this planet with our fellow animal companions. Do not take it for granted or abuse it. And remember:
“The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.” – Charles Darwin
