Mindfulness and Presence

I just wanted to share a few pictures that I have taken over the last couple of days that show us just how beautiful our country of England is, but also remind us to be mindfully present to that beauty at all times.

When finishing work on Tuesday, I could have just driven straight home as I usually do each afternoon. I had to rush back to get changed before collecting a friend and driving into Birmingham where we were seeing a show. But, instead of getting caught up in that rush I decided to take a few moments to drive in the opposite direction to home and go to look at the sunset. I could tell that it was going to be a spectacular one, and I didn’t want to miss it. I am glad I made the effort!

Frosty sunrise
Sunrise when I arrived at work. I stood in the middle of the car park and was just amazed by this sky.

Glorious sunset 19-01-16
Sunset over the fields. There is no filter on this photograph. This is pure Earth’s beauty. I pulled up at the side of the road, leaned over the gate and saw this absolutely stunning sight complete with ewes and their new born lambs on the crest of the hill. Simply gorgeous.

Sunset through branch
I love the patterns of bare tree branches!

Today, the temperature was very low and even with the Sun shining in a clear sky, frost sparkled everywhere. On my lunch break I decided: ‘to hell with this! I’m going outside!” The crisp, fresh air and the absolutely stunning sights refreshed me more than anything.  Not only did I give my mind a proper break from work and dealing with teenage behaviour, I got some great photographs to boot!

Winter Fields
Instead of driving by, unseeing, I really took the time to notice what was around me and in doing so saw little bits of beauty that I could easily have missed.

I think there is a lesson in this: be mindfully present, always. The little wonders can easily pass you by unless you take a little moment to step away from the routine and let those wonders reveal themselves to you. Just by driving a few streets away from my work I felt like I was in a completely different world – a frosty winter wonderland!

We are more in control of our days than we think. Instead of letting events over take you, or dictate how you feel, by consciously shifting your mindset – even for a moment – you can completely alter the vibe of your whole day. Even just these few moments to stop, take a photograph and appreciate the view (whether on the way to, during, or after work) made my day a whole lot more pleasurable. Instead of just going through the motions of work, I took some time to consciously appreciate nature and engage in an activity that I love, and that put a big smile on my face.

With love,

Alexandra

  1. What stunning photos! You have a great gift Alex! You zoom in where others rush on by. You notice the detail and snap it up. You capture bits of magic that could just as easily slip away. What a wonderful way to start the week. Monday don’t have to be gloomy after all – they can be amazingly beautiful. Thank you for reminding me to take the time to stop and look! x
